Live UFC Match

Keith Jardine

Keith Jardine hadn’t gone to Punta Cana on vacation, and if he had, it would have been a prime candidate for the Travel Channel series “When Vacations Attack.” Instead, Keith Jardine was in the Dominican Republic on business, fighting Kiko France in his first bout after a five fight losing streak had crippled his career.

Keith Jordina was far removed from the days where he headlined packed arenas in UFC bouts against the likes of Chuck Liddell and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, but he needed a fight, and he needed a win to get back on track. So Punta Cana it was. Yet when Keith Jardine arrived for the night’s work, he found out just what he was dealing with in terms of the administration of the show and the likelihood of him and his peers getting paid that night in December of 2010.

The news wasn’t good.

“They didn’t even have a proper timekeeper or a bell, the rounds were going too long, and it was a mess,” recalled Jardine. “I was sitting there watching this, and thinking that I fight because I’m a fighter, and at that point I really needed a win, so I would have fought for free, and I knew that I probably was fighting for free, and I went out and did it for the love of the game.”

Most fighters would have walked away, and frankly, who could blame them? Jardine is not most fighters though, and he embraces the art of the fight like few do, something you don’t always see these days.
“Guys are fighting just not to lose, and they’re not laying anything on the line,” he said. “They’re just businessmen, and that’s unfortunate.”

Jardine fought France, winning a three round unanimous decision to snap his losing streak. The rest of the fighters on the card, including UFC vets Mike Nickels, Terry Martin, Eliot Marshall, Kerry Schall, and Paul Buentello, as well as future Ultimate Fighter winner John Dodson, all competed as well, and it gave Jardine a little more faith in those still paying respect to the purity of the sport.
